Among all achievements there is a point where it was merely an idea, a fleeting thought or deep desire. High achievers always set goals and it’s basically a massive target with a bull’s eye in the middle. There are multiple frame works that help you layout your goals eg SMART or From X to Y by When but no matter what your desire is there always to be a trade off. Regardless of the size of your goal what are you willing to trade to see this goal out? Time? Money? Sometimes people will even risk their life. Do you think the latter of the trade offs is ridiculous? Maybe, but if your life is on the line what are the chances of reaching the outcome? Very high.
I am not saying by any means that you need to risk it all to achieve but what it’s showing is that having an emotional connection to the goal will drive behavior in the right direction. I urge all my clients in the gym to make their goals so attractive that the mere thought of what it would be like to have this outcome has enough power to PULL them in the right direction. You don’t want to have to push and push day in day out because it will feel like everything is against you. What if the outcome was so attractive its force PULLED you towards it and everyone conspired with you to see you achieve it? What could you do?
Have you ever gone through challenges, hurdles and roadblocks but kept your vision alive and real with enough conviction that you followed through and eventually enjoyed the destination only to stand there and ask yourself “ is this it”? This happens more times than not with people and I can put it down to a few reasons.
- You didn’t realise how much sacrifice you needed to see it through?
- You didn’t accept help because you thought you could do it on your own?
- You sacrificed other people for your personal gain?
- You didn’t bring anyone with similar goals along on the ride with you.
Nothing good comes from the person who achieves high but leaves a trail of destruction. Besides the personal satisfaction gained from achieving in any area, a far more fulfilling and longer lasting image of yourself in the eyes of others is this analogy. When you climb a mountain it should only be for 2 reasons. One, to see the next mountains peak and the other is to show others how to climb the same mountain you did…end of story.
Without applying this simple strategy you will feel a little something was missing even when you achieve everything you had set out to achieve.
